A common myth in the hobby is that bioactive terrariums are 'zero maintenance'. While the isopods and springtails handle the waste management, the botanical side of the ecosystem requires active pruning. Under high-quality LED lighting, plants like creeping fig or philodendron will grow explosively, eventually choking out the light to the lower levels and restricting your pet's movement. You cannot simply rip leaves out by hand. Ripping damages the plant's vascular system, inviting fungal rot. Long stainless steel vivarium scissors allow you to make clean, surgical cuts at the exact node you want, promoting healthy regrowth. Furthermore, long terrarium tweezers allow you to replant the cuttings directly into the soil without digging massive holes with your fingers.
There are many 'reptile brand' feeding tongs on the market, but they are often short, flimsy, or overly expensive. We turned to the aquarium hobby and adopted the VIVOSUN Aquascaping Tools because they offer professional-grade length and tension at a fraction of the cost. When designing a complex paludarium with a water feature, being able to reach the bottom of the tank without plunging your entire arm into the water is a massive relief. Additionally, the curved tweezers in this kit are our absolute favorite tool for spot-cleaning. When a python leaves a massive urate deposit that the clean-up crew can't handle, these tweezers let us pluck it out instantly without destroying the surrounding landscape.
When using the curved scissors to prune your vivarium, always identify the leaf node (the small bump on the stem where a leaf attaches). Make your cut about a quarter-inch above the node at a 45-degree angle. This ensures the plant will branch out rather than dying back. For planting delicate species like jewel orchids or miniature ferns, use the straight tweezers. Gently grasp the plant by the root base (not the fragile stem), push the tweezers deep into the ABG mix, and then slowly open the tweezers as you pull them out. The substrate will naturally collapse around the roots, securing the plant perfectly without you ever having to dig a hole.
While these tools are made of stainless steel, 'stainless' does not mean 'rust-proof'. In the ultra-humid environment of a tropical terrarium, water droplets left on the metal will eventually cause pitting and surface rust. After every pruning or feeding session, immediately wipe the tools completely dry with a microfiber cloth before putting them back in their pouch. Once every few months, apply a single drop of food-safe mineral oil or vegetable oil to the hinge of the scissors to keep the action smooth and prevent seizing.

If you are working in a massive, custom-built enclosure (e.g., a 4-foot tall iguana tank), even 15-inch tweezers might be too short; you may need to look for specialized 24-inch snake feeding tongs. Conversely, if you are working in a tiny 8x8x8 nano-terrarium for jumping spiders, these massive tools will be incredibly clumsy, and a standard set of medical forceps would be much more appropriate. However, for the vast majority of standard 18x18x24 or 36x18x18 enclosures, this VIVOSUN aquascaping kit is the perfect sweet spot of reach and precision.
