A bioactive terrarium is a high-humidity, constantly moist environment. Over time, this constant moisture, combined with the buildup of hard water stains and microscopic algae on the glass, completely ruins the silicone seal of standard suction cups. This creates a highly stressful environment for arboreal reptiles. A Crested Gecko leaping onto a failing suction cup ledge will take a terrifying fall, often leading to them refusing to eat from that spot again due to stress. A magnetic gecko ledge solves this physics problem entirely. By using magnetic force through the glass, the humidity inside the tank becomes irrelevant. Your gecko gets a rock-solid, permanent arboreal reptile feeding station that they can trust and feel secure on.
At BioactiveHub, we exclusively use Pangea magnetic ledges in all of our New Caledonian gecko display enclosures. We prefer Pangea's design over 3D-printed alternatives because the thick, laser-cut acrylic is non-porous. 3D-printed plastic has microscopic layer lines that can trap rotting fruit diet and harbor dangerous bacteria, making them nearly impossible to fully sterilize. The smooth acrylic of the Pangea feeder wipes completely clean with just a damp paper towel. Furthermore, the magnets they use are rated for thick glass (up to 1/4 inch), meaning they work perfectly on our large, heavy-duty Exo Terra and ReptiZoo glass terrariums without slowly sliding down the wall.
WARNING: Do NOT simply let the two magnets snap together through the glass. The force of these neodymium magnets is strong enough to shatter thin terrarium glass or crush your fingers. To install the ledge safely, place the inside acrylic piece against the glass where you want it. Then, take the exterior magnet, place it several inches away on the outside glass, and slowly slide it toward the ledge until the magnetic fields catch. To move or adjust the ledge later, always slide the exterior magnet; never try to pull it straight off.
Maintenance is incredibly straightforward. Remove the disposable plastic feeding cups, and use a damp cloth to wipe away any smeared gecko diet. Once a month, we recommend completely removing the ledge from the terrarium and washing the acrylic piece in the sink with warm water and a mild, reptile-safe soap (like chlorhexidine solution). Do not use abrasive sponges, as they will scratch the clear acrylic and make it look cloudy over time. Never put the magnetic components in the dishwasher, as extreme heat can permanently demagnetize them.

If you are keeping terrestrial (ground-dwelling) species like Leopard Geckos, Dart Frogs, or Hognose Snakes, an elevated magnetic ledge is entirely useless; you should use standard, heavy ceramic bowls on the ground. If you have a custom-built PVC or wooden enclosure with walls thicker than 1/4 inch, the magnets on this feeder will likely not be strong enough to hold through the thick material. In those specific cases, you will need to drill holes and use a ledge that mounts permanently with screws or bolts.
