The Vertical Ecosystem: Arboreal Geckos

Build a jungle in the heights. Everything you need to know about vertical terrariums, natural vines, and the humidity cycle.

Gravity Matters: Vertical Terrariums

Arboreal reptiles, like the Crested Gecko (Correlophus ciliatus) or the Gargoyle Gecko, spend 99% of their lives without touching the ground. For them, a wide terrarium is useless; they need height (at least 24 inches tall, ideally 36 inches) and multiple transversal climbing routes.

In a vertical bioactive system, the big challenge is getting plants and hides to fill the upper volume of the tank, not just the floor.

⚠️ The Density Rule: A crested gecko terrarium must have at least 70% leaf coverage. If you can spot your gecko at a single glance during the day, your terrarium is too empty and your pet will suffer from chronic stress.

1. 3D Backgrounds and Expanding Foam

Smooth glass walls are wasted space. Experts build 3D backgrounds that act as vertical planters.

  • The Foam Technique: Lay the terrarium on its back. Glue cork tubes, Ghostwood branches, and plastic net cups with silicone. Then, fill the gaps with polyurethane expanding foam.
  • Natural Texture: Before the foam completely cures, carve it and cover it with black silicone. Press a dry mixture of coco coir and peat moss into the wet silicone to create a natural "dirt" wall.

2. Cork Tubes: The Perfect Hides

In the wild, these geckos sleep hidden in crevices of dead trees or inside thick rolled-up leaves. Hollow cork bark tubes are absolutely mandatory.

  • Place the tubes at diagonal angles, never fully vertical or fully horizontal.
  • Ensure the tube's diameter is narrow enough so the gecko feels "hugged" by the wooden walls, but wide enough so they don't get stuck.

3. Plants for the Upper Canopy

Ground plants (like ferns) won't help your gecko. You need epiphytic and aggressively climbing plants:

  • Bromeliads (Neoregelia): Plant them soil-less directly into the foam wall or cork crevices. Their cups hold water where the gecko can drink.
  • Pothos (Epipremnum aureum): It will grow upwards seeking LED light and wrap around branches. Its leaves are strong enough to support an adult gecko's jump.
  • Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina): If you have a very large terrarium, a small tree planted in the ground will provide an instant forest of branches.

4. The Humidity Cycle (The Peak and the Valley)

The number one mistake with crested geckos is keeping the terrarium soaked at 90% humidity 24/7. This causes deadly respiratory infections and rots the gecko's feet.

  • The Nighttime Peak: At night, mist heavily (manual or automatic misting) to raise humidity to 80-90%. This is when the gecko wakes up and drinks droplets off the leaves.
  • The Daytime Valley: During the day, the terrarium MUST dry out almost completely (dropping to 50-60% humidity). Make sure your terrarium has a mesh top to allow for this drying period.

5. Elevated Feeding

Arboreal geckos rarely go down to the floor to hunt or eat. You must use magnetic or suction-cup feeding ledges attached to the upper glass.

Offer their powdered diet (Pangea or Repashy) on the upper ledge. If you release crickets or roaches, make sure they are climbing species so the gecko can hunt them in the vines.
